Lava Pants

Lava Pants

Train smarter and swim faster with LAVA PANTS. Retire your pull buoy and focus more power on your swim stroke training.

This training wetsuit offers race-level buoyancy and a natural range of motion at every training session, which over time improves technique and pacing while building muscle memory. Proper body position increases stroke efficiency and adjusts for the proper catch phase for racing. Dynamic design makes LAVA Pants comfortable to train in and easy to change into and out of. The waistband is low-cut in the front and rides higher in the back, allowing for natural breathing and comfortable flip turns without concern of losing your suit. As a 3/4-length pant, LAVA Pants are easy to put on in or out of the water, for a quick transition from warm up to workout to cool down. Made for the pool but warm enough for some open water swims, heavy-duty construction ensures that LAVA Pants are a durable training tool for most water conditions.

LAVA PANTS are completely legal under the new rules set by USAT and WTC when wetsuits are legal. LAVA PANTS are a wetsuit and can only be worn in races that permit wetsuits. Always check with the race director prior to using the LAVA PANTS in competition. They are primarily intended for training.

  • When is my rental wetsuit order deadline?
    • The last day you can place an order for a rental wetsuit is the Friday a week before your race weekend. You MUST upgrade to 2-Day or Overnight shipping. We cannot guarantee availability if you order at this late date. We will contact you immediately if we do not have your suit.

  • What wetsuit model will I receive?
    • Our 2011 rental fleet consists of Vortex 3 full suits and Volt / Vortex 3 sleeveless suits. These suits are primarily 2010 models. Occasionally, due to inventory flow and large rental volume, we will need to make substitutions, but we will always provide you with the best possible suit we have at hand. A certain wetsuit model cannot be guaranteed, nor can we honor requests for specific models.

  • How do I know what size to choose?
    • Please refer to our interactive sizing slider or sizing chart. A great deal of research has gone into our sizing chart and it is 99% accurate, however we cannot guarantee any fits. Still have questions? Call XTERRA WETSUITS customer service at 858.565.9500.

  • What if my rental wetsuit doesn't fit?

  • Do you ship rentals internationally?
    • Unfortunately, we can only ship rentals to addresses within the United States.

Details

A winning approach to swim training requires a visionary approach to suit design. LAVA Pants are the only training wetsuit to boast 5mm neoprene on both the front and back of the suit to below the knees, ensuring maximum lift and optimal body position. The comfort-stitched waistband rides low on the torso for a free range of motion and a sturdy draw cord keeps the suit in place. X-MAX Seam Seal technology ensures long-lasting waterproof seams that simulate the compression and warmth of a wetsuit. The ¾-length pants are easy to pull on before a swim or in the water, and can be trimmed by up to 6 cm to achieve the right fit.

TRAINING SHOULD BE LIKE RACING, but it is often difficult to get a wetsuit training session in the pool before a race.  So on race day you end up putting on your wetsuit for the first time since your last race.  This is a less than ideal situation, but so is wearing your wetsuit in a warm pool or showing up at a Masters session in a full wetsuit.  Incorporating LAVA PANTS into just one swim session a week will begin to get your body in the proper position and adjust your catch into actual race-specific position.

CARE GUIDE - Rinse with fresh water after every use.  Let dry inside out.  Dry in the shade, not in the sun.  After they are dry - stress on AFTER - you can fold them or roll them.

ARE THEY FASTER THAN A WETSUIT? - A wetsuit is faster than just the LAVA PANTS.  For races longer than 500 yards, you'll definitely want a wetsuit.  Plus, if you're a new swimmer you should always swim in a wetsuit (sleeveless or fullsuit) when legal.

DO THEY REPLACE MY WETSUIT? - no.  The LAVA PANTS are designed to complement your wetsuit, permitting you to swim in the pool but get the same body position, catch phase and pull phase that you'll get on race day.

ARE LAVA PANTS RACE LEGAL?  LAVA PANTS are completely legal under the new rules set by USAT and WTC when wetsuits are legal. LAVA PANTS are a wetsuit and can only be worn in races that permit wetsuits. Always check with the race director prior to using the LAVA PANTS in competition. They are primarily intended for training. We highly suggest that you race in a sleeveless ("john") wetsuit or a fullsuit instead of your LAVA PANTS.

HOW SHOULD THEY FIT? - Your LAVA PANTS should fit snugly but not tight.  Since you will be pushing off the wall, it is most important that you tie them tightly at the waist.  It's OK to get water in them.

WHAT'S YOUR FIT GUARANTEE? - If you are not satisfied with the fit for any reason, or if you want to return your LAVA PANTS for any reason, you have 60 days from the time you receive your pants to do so.  This is an industry first, and we're doing it because we know that 99% of you will love them.

HOW DO I PUT THEM ON AND TAKE THEM OFF? - One leg at a time.  In or out of the water.  It's that easy.  (we're kidding a little here, and we'll give you a link to a short video very soon)

SHOULD I WEAR ANYTHING UNDERNEATH THE LAVA PANTS? - Males may wear jammers or speedos, whereas females may wear regular swim bottoms or one-piece swimsuits underneath the LAVA PANTS.   This is due to the low rise of the LAVA PANTS, and plus, you'll be a lot more comfortable.

HOW DO THEY COMPARE TO THE "COMPETITION"? - we'd like to say that there is no competition, but then you wouldn't take us seriously.  Instead, we encourage you to compare a few of "their" features to ours.  Our pants: (1) are 5 millimeter front and back; (2) have a comfort waist design; (3) have a 60-day guarantee; (4) have a low-cut comfort front; and (5) are priced so that we make a little money and you gain a lot of speed.

I have worn the Desoto Speed Tube and like those pantsa lot. Although I love the Desoto pants, I like these even better, more comfortable, better fit, and even cheaper. I have completed 2 one hour sessions in them the past 2 days and have had my best 2 swims ever. I will be buying a second pair real soon. (Posted on 4/14/14)

  3. Tend to slide down waist Review by Doug

First, let me say I love my Lava Pants! They are a great training tool. My only complaint is they slide down my waist after every 500 yards or so in the pool. I have to stop and tug them back up. I'm sure I have the correct size as they are very tight/snug when I put them on. I tie the waist band tight but they still slip down. I've been training in them for 3 weeks now and have tried pulling the leg bottoms almost up to the bottom of my knees to no avail. Anybody else having this problem? (Posted on 3/14/14)

The Lava pant does just what it is designed to do. Like most triathletes, I spend a lot of time in a pool. I work on form and technique so I can be a good swimmer. Wetsuits do make us swim a bit differently and I have never wanted to wear my wetsuits in the pool. The Lava Pant is great for getting in and getting the wetsuit feel. I think they would be great for a warm water triathlon because they allow you to maintain your kick and they keep you on top of the water. I think these are a great tool and fun to swim in!!! I tried the Lava Pants in the pool for the first time the other day. Normally I feel like a manatee in the water. I'm slow. Since I registered for my first Ironman this season, I need to go faster. In the first swim session, the pants shaved off so much time it was CRAZY! I felt more like a shark!

They are easy on and off and you barely notice that you are wearing them (other than your warp speed laps!)

I cannot wait to use these all the time and watch my swimming improve! I highly recommend them! DON'T HESITATE to get them! (Posted on 1/29/14)

  8. What Took So Long? Review by Skel

    Quality

I gave the pants a good hour workout Sunday afternoon and the first thing that came to my mind was, “what took you so long?” Really, I don’t ever want to train in the pool again without them. First the obvious. In eliminating the need for a pull buoy I swam faster and smoother with less effort. And of course the slick skin of the pant eliminates even more drag. Having my legs totally free allowed me much more freedom in my hips, again creating more speed with less effort. In the recent past I’ve had some issues with my lower body position on my backstroke. Not anymore. The pants put me right where I need to be for a good kick, good hip turns, and a smooth stroke. Really, I’m a very average swimmer but these pants allowed me to kick it up a notch without exerting additional effort.

Now as for the size. At 205 with a 35 inch waist, I’m right on the cusp between a medium and a large. Thus, while the medium was tight leaving me minimal coverage, the large will be too big once I drop 10-15 lbs. No worries, though. The pants are priced right and buying another pair in a couple of months is minor compared to the benefits I expect I’ll get from them. (Posted on 9/10/13)

  9. AWESOME Training Tool Review by Chelo

I just completed my 1st training session with my new LAVA Pants....they are AWESOME!!! I was able to shave 20 seconds and 16 strokes off my 100 interval. I in an outdoor pool and it was sunny and 85 degrees. I was very comfortable and never felt like I was roasting. For anyone who trains mostly in a pool (like me) these are a MUST have. The sizing chart is accurate. I have a 34" waist and I ordered the large and they fit perfect. I was told by customer service - if you are close to the larger size - order the larger size. Do not be put off by the "low cut" as they are cut no lower than the speedo shorts I normally wear. (Posted on 8/30/13)

  10. Frickin' Awesome Cheater Pants! Review by Avery Steve

Got my Lava pants today and did my regular lake swim. Love them. I like the safety that a wetsuit's buoyancy gives when open-water training, but don't like wearing a wetsuit (even my Vector Pro) when it's hot in July-August-September and the water's warm. The Lava pants are perfect - the lower-body lift of the suit, the safety factor of being able to float effortlessly, and the feel of the water on my arms and chest. Absolutely what I hoped for when I ordered them. Thanks! (Posted on 8/30/13)

I just completed my 1st training session with my new LAVA Pants....they are AWESOME!!!! I was able to shave 20 seconds and 16 strokes off my 100 interval time. I used them in an outdoor poll on a sunny 85 degree day and I was very comfortable. I have a 34 inch waist and ordered the large and they fit perfectly. Customer Service told me to use the sizing chart and if you are in the higher range of the size - order the larger size. Do not be intimidated by the "low cut" - they are no lower than the speedo shorts I normally wear. These will certainly change the way I train. (Posted on 8/29/13)

Just got these - size is unisex and seems to cover range as far as last poster's question - consider them "knicker" length so work for variety of leg length. I am 5' 9" female 150 pds, took Med, which also fit my 6' 3" husband. LOVED them in the pool so much, I am going to use them instead of sleeveless wetsuit at next triathlon! I can tell it will be a faster transition. They provide just enough warmth for muscles on legs, and truly better body alignment benefit than even my wetsuit (probably due to the thicker material). Great product! (Posted on 8/29/13)

I got my pair a little over a week ago. I took them for a pool sesh the same night and was a little curious to what kind of looks I'd get wearing 5 mil in the pool but if anything I got nothing but swimmers gazing lap after lap. By far one of the most comfortable training sessions I've ever had. I was very pleased with my workout. Your legs may get a little heated if you are training really hard but it's nothing uncomfortable just extra cold when you rinse off. (Posted on 8/19/13)

  15. Surprisingly Awesome Review by IfICan

I picked up a pair of the lava pants this past weekend even though my instinct was they felt a little off when trying them on. Off being relative i think its the low cut that makes them feel strange, it will definitely take some getting used too.

Both Saturday and Sunday evening i had a chance to get out and do open water swims with them. Let me preface this with i rarely ever swim without a wetsuit in the ocean for several reasons but the main being I rarely ever race without it and believe it or not safe. I love knowing and have taught myself over the years to roll on my back as a default. With a wetsuit without any effort at all you simply float. That leads me to the pants: This is hard for me to believe but makes sense when you think about it, the pants by themselves float me as good as a full suit. I believe that to be because the pants are 5 mil all the way around and most suits are not. A side effect I never anticipated is the feed back i get from the water with just the pants vs full suit across the upper shoulders and back. Sure we all pool swim and you get some there but its not the same when you ocean swim, especially when you always ocean swim with a full suit. The added feedback and effortless alignment (keeping my legs high) makes these pants a hit with me and i am sure many others as they get used to using them. They still feel a little funny because they ride so low. (Posted on 8/14/13)

I did a pool training session in the LAVA pants today and they were awesome!!! I was surprised at the drag reduction and most of all my legs didn't feel on fire overheating from temperature warmth of the water. I had about a 25-30 second reduction in 100 yard pace compared to intervals with a pool buoy. I felt like I had less drag in my LAVA pants than my 2XU R3 wetsuit, I'm definitely going XTERRA on my next wetsuit. The freedom and mobility was also way better than my wetsuit's legs. I'm getting another pair! (Posted on 8/14/13)
