Growing up in Montana, Lewis competed in just about every competitive sport there was. When he was old enough, he began running with his dad. As he got older, he got serious with cycling and spent a few years at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs bike racing for the US National Team. Under the tutelage of Chris Carmichael and Roy Knickman, Lewis learned a lot of the focus and training ideas he still uses racing today. This is when he got his first exposure to triathlon and made the transition to multisport.
